Responsibilities
– Perform blood draws using straight and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety
– Label specimens accurately and process them by centrifuging, splitting, and freezing according to established protocols
– Collect and store specimens such as blood, urine, or fecal samples, adhering to proper procedures and temperature controls
– Explain specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients of diverse demographics
– Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen labels and ensure all data is accurately recorded
– Package specimens properly for transport, maintaining specimen integrity during transit
– Maintain accurate records, update patient information, and log maintenance data
– Comply with OSHA and Department of Environmental Protection regulations
– Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and participate in annual training sessions
– Respond to inquiries by reading laboratory results and managing phone communications
Required Skills
– Proven experience in blood collection and phlebotomy
– Knowledge of specimen processing, including labeling, centrifuging, and storage
– Ability to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients
– Strong attention to detail to ensure specimen accuracy
– Familiarity with laboratory requisitions and data entry
Additional Skills & Requirements
– Certification or licensure as a phlebotomist preferred; applicable state licensing requirements should be met
– Experience working with diverse patient populations is highly desirable
– Availability to work schedules including mornings, afternoons, and evenings as outlined
– Prior knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations regarding specimen handling and occupational safety
– High school diploma or equivalent required; formal phlebotomy training or coursework is a plus
