Lab – Phlebotomist

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws using straight or butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and sample quality
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to established protocols
  • Explain the specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients
  • Collect and store specimens such as blood, urine, or fecal samples in accordance with procedures
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimens, ensuring accuracy in labeling and documentation
  • Package specimens securely for transport, maintaining sample integrity during transfer
  • Store specimens at proper temperatures and follow specific protocols for each test
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations, including wearing appropriate PPE
  • Keep accurate records, update patient information, and perform routine maintenance and cleaning tasks
  • Attend annual department training sessions and participate in any additional duties as assigned
  • Respond to inquiries and communicate laboratory results as needed

Required Skills

  • Experience performing blood draws and specimen collection procedures
  • Knowledge of specimen labeling, centrifuging, and sample storage processes
  • Ability to explain venipuncture procedures in a clear, courteous manner
  • Understanding of laboratory requisitions and proper documentation practices
  • Familiarity with OSHA and DEP safety and regulatory standards

Additional Skills & Requirements

  • Certification or licensure as a phlebotomist is preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent; formal training in phlebotomy is a plus
  • Prior experience in a clinical laboratory or healthcare environment is advantageous
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends or evening shifts
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced setting while maintaining attention to detail
