Responsibilities
- Sort and receive specimens in the laboratory department
- Perform routine instrument maintenance on laboratory equipment
- Centrifuge specimens, prepare and print additional labels, and record data such as temperature charts
- Store and retrieve specimens efficiently
- Prepare reagents and media required for laboratory testing
- Prepare specimens at workstations for testing, including building worklists, aliquoting samples, and inspecting specimens for quality (clots, fibrin)
- Inoculate samples and prepare slides for microscopic analysis
- Perform quality assurance and quality control duties as assigned
- Resolve pending sample lists and locate missing samples
- Decontaminate work areas and perform weekly radioactive wipe tests
- Maintain accurate department records and change gas cylinders as needed
- Follow all PPE protocols and safety regulations
- Operate laboratory computer systems and PCs for data entry and reporting
- Dispose of biohazardous materials safely and properly
- Complete training and competency checklists to ensure compliance and proficiency
Required Skills
- Ability to establish and prioritize work tasks effectively
- Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently
- Good communication skills to interact courteously with coworkers and internal/external customers
- Proficiency in using laboratory computer systems and basic PC operations
Additional Skills & Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Medical assistant training is helpful; coursework in math and science is preferred
- No prior work experience required
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks and establish work priorities
- Candidates should be able to retain information learned and demonstrate a commitment to safety protocols
- Schedule flexibility may be necessary to support laboratory operations
