Lab – Lab Assistant

Responsibilities

  • Sort and receive specimens in the laboratory Department
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance on laboratory equipment
  • Centifuge specimens, prepare extra labels, and record data such as temperature charts
  • Store and retrieve specimens as needed
  • Prepare reagents and media for testing protocols
  • Prepare specimens at workstations for testing, including building worklists and aliquoting samples
  • Check specimens for clots and fibrin, perform inoculation, and slide preparation
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control duties as assigned
  • Resolve pending lists and locate missing samples
  • Decontaminate work areas and perform weekly radioactive wipe tests
  • Maintain departmental records and files
  • Change gas cylinders and dispose of biohazardous material following safety protocols
  • Follow all PPE requirements and safety regulations
  • Operate laboratory computer systems and PCs efficiently
  • Complete training and competency checklists as required

Required Skills

  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively to maximize workstation efficiency
  • Attention to detail to ensure accurate specimen handling and data recording
  • Good interpersonal skills to interact courteously with coworkers and customers
  • Basic computer skills for operating laboratory systems and PCs

Additional Skills & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; medical assistant training is helpful
  • Experience in math and science courses preferred, though no prior work experience is necessary
  • Must be able to retain information once learned and handle multiple tasks efficiently
  • Schedule flexibility may be beneficial to meet laboratory operational needs
